Laboulaye was well-known in the United States for his pamphlets published during the US Civil War. Many Americans admired his defense of the Union cause, his abolitionist stance, and his support for President Abraham Lincoln. They considered Laboulaye one of the leading French anti-slavery activists who helped persuade France not to support the Confederacy.
